Please note: To use this feature, you need the AI Assist add-on.
Using AI Assist, you can automatically paraphrase a selected text passage in the Document Browser. The generated paraphrase is saved in MAXQDA like a regular paraphrase, which means that all MAXQDA paraphrase functions apply to the AI Assist generated ones.
How to paraphrase using AI Assist
- Select the text you would like to paraphrase in the "Document Browser" by highlighting it.
- Find the
AI Assist icon in the toolbar and select Paraphrase Selected Text.
- In the dialog box that will appear, choose the desired output language and length (short, medium, long). The language may differ from the selected text passage's original lanaguage.
- When ready, click OK.

You can modify the paraphrase in the dialog as you prefer. Once you click OK, the paraphrase will be saved and shown in the sidebar on the right side to the text.
Keep in mind that paraphrased text segments must not overlap in a document.
You can access this function from various other pathways:
- When you are in Paraphrase mode, you can highlight the text segment you would like to paraphrase, like you would do when manually paraphrasing. Then, you can request AI Assist to generate a paraphrase by clicking the AI Assist button on the paraphrase window.
- Highlight and right-click the text you would like to paraphrase. In the context menu, select AI Assist > Paraphrase Selected Text.
- Highlight the text you would like to paraphrase in the "Document Browser," and navigate to the main menu. There, select AI Assist > Text Selection > Paraphrase Selected Text.
Please note:
- AI Assist provides very good results for very many use cases. Nevertheless, it is important that you check the results.
- If you analyze texts with critical content (violence, hate speech, bullying, etc.), no paraphrase may not be created.
- Usually, you will receive the same or very similar paraphrases for the same segment. However, it may happen that a paraphrase differs from previous ones, because the generative language model used provides dynamic results and because AI Assist is continuously optimized.
