What is the course about?

This self-study course covers the key features in MAXQDA from basic to more complex topics, enabling you to create and manage a project independently upon completion.

The duration of the course varies based on your personal learning pace and your schedule, but it usually lasts two to four weeks.

After all lessons are successfully completed, you will receive an official MAXQDA certificate.

What does the course contain?

All materials have been developed by our certified MAXQDA trainer Andreas Müller based on his 8 years experience from training courses and will introduce you to the software step by step. The course consists of the following modules:

  • 1. Foundations (Interface, Set up)
In this module, you will get started with MAXQDA. You will explore what the software is commonly used for and get an overview of its core functionality to help you get started quickly. You will build a solid foundation by learning how to save your project file, create backups, and import documents in a structure that gives you the most analysis options.
  • 2. Data Exploration
This module is all about getting to know your data by heart. You will learn how to use many of MAXQDA’s essential features, such as color codes, segment comments, and the Questions-Themes-Theories (QTT) feature. These tools are especially helpful at the beginning of the research process but will also be useful throughout your entire project.
  • 3. Coding Documents
Learn how to code your documents, such as interviews, observations, and PDF files. You will explore how to create codes based on patterns you identify in your data and how to apply codes you already have in mind. You will also investigate different ways to (re)organize your code system and how the text search feature can help you code large amounts of data quickly.
  • 4. Document Variables
Explore how to integrate quantitative metadata as contextual information for your documents. You will explore how to create and collect information in the form of document variables that can store socio-demographic details such as the age, gender, or occupation of your research participants. You will learn how to prepare this data in advance, import it into MAXQDA, and use it effectively in your analysis.
  • 5. Retrieving and Exporting Data
This module is all about analyzing your textual data. You will learn how to retrieve data using the Retrieved Segments window and the Coded Segments overview. You will compare statements from your data for individual documents and groups of documents. Finally, you will create well-structured reports using the Smart Publisher and the Codebook feature to help you write up your results.
  • 6. Visual Tools
Discover how to use visualization tools to gain new insights and communicate your results in a compelling way. You will learn what visual tools can be used for and the implications of using them. You will also use visual tools to compare documents and groups of documents, explore relationships between codes, and organize your concepts and emerging theories in a visual interface.

  • 7. The AI Assist
In this module, the focus lies on using generative AI to support your qualitative research. You will learn about the AI Assist feature and how it can enhance your analysis by summarizing your findings and generating suggestions for new codes. You will also explore the potential and limitations of AI support and learn how to optimize its use.

What are the requirements?

The course can be taken with no prior knowledge of MAXQDA. However, it is also ideal for users who want to refresh their knowledge or want to learn a newer version of MAXQDA.

In order to try the features out, you will need a working installation of MAXQDA 24. For the AI Assist features, you need a MAXQDA account. If you don’t have MAXQDA, you can download a free trial. Vimeo is used as the platform to play the videos embedded in the course.
